A homeowner researching a replacement air conditioner can now ask an AI tool to explain equipment options, compare features, and help narrow the decision. Advertising is becoming part of that research experience.
For HVAC, plumbing, and electrical contractors planning their 2027 marketing budgets, that creates a practical question: what should change in the ad account, on the website, and in the way leads are measured?
Start by understanding the placement. An ad within an AI search experience, a sponsored card below a response, and an organic recommendation are different things. Paying for an ad does not mean purchasing the assistant’s opinion.
The opportunity deserves attention. It also deserves the same scrutiny you would apply to any advertising expense: can it help you acquire the right jobs at a cost your business can support?
What does “ads inside the answer” actually mean?
The phrase describes a broader shift toward advertising within conversational research. The placement depends on the platform.
Google supports labeled advertising within AI Overviews and AI Mode. ChatGPT separates ads from its responses. Microsoft also offers advertising in Copilot, with its own formats and participation requirements.
These distinctions matter when evaluating a proposal. Ask your advertising partner to identify the platform, placement, eligibility requirements, and reporting available. A promise of “AI visibility” is too vague to assess.
Consumer behavior supports paying attention to this category. BrightLocal’s 2026 research found that 45% of consumers use AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% the previous year. That finding concerns local businesses broadly. It does not tell us what share of contractor leads comes from AI advertising or whether those leads will be profitable.
Where can contractors explore AI advertising?
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google’s AI search advertising uses existing Google Ads campaigns. There is no separate AI Mode campaign that contractors must purchase.
According to Google’s eligibility documentation, Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns can participate. Exact and phrase match keywords can qualify for queries with direct commercial intent. AI-powered targeting also supports contextual matching that considers the query and AI response.
That is a reason to review your setup, rather than automatically replace a working keyword strategy. Your services, conversion data, geographic targeting, and tolerance for broader traffic should guide any changes.
ChatGPT
OpenAI introduced a beta self-serve Ads Manager in May 2026. Its advertiser announcement describes advertising that remains clearly separate from ChatGPT’s answers.
Before adding it to a contractor’s media plan, confirm current account access, location targeting, measurement, and advertiser availability. A platform’s audience size alone does not establish whether you can reach homeowners in your service area efficiently.
Microsoft Copilot
If you already advertise through Microsoft Advertising, include Copilot in your account review. Have your advertising partner confirm the applicable settings, available placements, and reporting in your account.
Keep forecasts tied to what you can verify. Estimated reach is useful for planning, but local service businesses ultimately need qualified inquiries from people they can serve.
What do conversational ads change about your website?
Some emerging ad formats let prospects ask questions before visiting a website or completing a traditional form.
Google’s Business Agent for Leads announcement describes a Gemini-powered agent inside an ad that answers questions using information from the advertiser’s website. Contractors should confirm industry and account eligibility before treating that feature as available to them.
The preparation is useful regardless: make your service information specific enough to help a homeowner make a decision.
Consider an electrical panel upgrade page. Does it explain what the work involves, the circumstances that affect price, whether an assessment is required, and which communities you serve? Does it distinguish routine scheduling from emergency availability?
You do not need to publish a fixed price for work that requires an inspection. You can explain the factors that determine the estimate and what happens next. That gives customers more useful information while keeping your promises accurate.
The same standard applies to financing, warranties, licenses, and response times. Review the details regularly, especially when advertising systems may use website content to generate assets or answer questions.
A five-step paid advertising plan for 2027
1. Review eligibility and controls with your advertising partner
Ask which campaigns can participate in AI search placements and whether targeting changes would support your business goals. Review service areas, exclusions, negative keywords, and conversion tracking before expanding reach.
Google does not currently let advertisers target AI Mode or AI Overviews exclusively, or opt out separately from Search. That limits how precisely you can isolate an AI-placement test. Make sure the proposed reporting can answer the question you want to investigate.
2. Improve the pages tied to your most valuable services
Start with a service you want more of, such as HVAC replacements, water heater installations, or panel upgrades.
Review the page against the questions your office hears before booking. Explain the service, coverage area, scheduling process, estimate requirements, and relevant qualifications. Check that the next step is easy to find and that forms work on mobile.
Prioritize useful, accurate answers over adding copy simply to make a page longer.
3. Make every inquiry traceable through the booking process
Check what happens after a call, form submission, or chat inquiry arrives. Who responds? How quickly? Where does the outcome get recorded?
If a conversational ad feature becomes available, verify what information it actually passes to your business before designing a transcript workflow. Prepare staff to use any supplied context, while confirming details directly with the customer.
For existing leads, improve source tracking and consistently record whether the inquiry became an appointment, estimate, or completed job.
4. Review AI-generated advertising assets
AI Max’s asset optimization features can use your existing assets and website information to help generate advertising content. Review the controls and reporting available for your setup.
Pay particular attention to claims with operational consequences: same-day service, prices, financing, service areas, and guarantees. Give your advertising partner approved language and a clear process for correcting inaccurate assets.
5. Define the budget and decision before testing
Choose a test amount your business can support, a review period, and a useful success measure. For example: can a targeting change produce qualified replacement estimates at an acceptable acquisition cost?
Protect campaigns that are already producing profitable work. Where possible, use controlled experiments and avoid changing several major variables at once.
Track qualified leads, booked appointments, completed jobs, and revenue where available. Clicks and engagement help explain performance, but they cannot establish profitability on their own. New inventory may perform well or poorly; its novelty does not guarantee cheaper leads.
Make the full customer journey work
AI advertising adds ways to reach a prospect. The prospect still needs accurate information, a clear next step, and a business that follows through.
Before increasing spend, test that journey yourself. Open the service page on your phone. Submit an inquiry. Check the response and the record in your CRM. Look for the point where a promising lead could be lost.
For your 2027 plan, begin with an account review, improve the service pages that support your priorities, and define how you will judge any test. Expand investment when the results support it.
