Why Does SEO Work?
SEO works because we know how search engines such as Google work. We know that Google has a large set of criteria that it looks for when deciding which pages to show consumers first when they type in any search. When we check all the boxes, your content is ranked higher and very likely chosen as the best option. Check out the video below by Jennifer Bagley, our CEO, for an amazing breakdown.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Marketing. SEO is following a specific set of guidelines that search engines look for in order to get a website or page found on Google. The major thing that differentiates SEO from paid advertising is what is known as “organic” ranking. You do not pay to be visible with this method. We follow the guidelines Google looks for because it is the King of internet search. According to netmarketshare.com, for the entire year of 2020, an astounding 93.89% of all internet searches performed on mobile devices were via Google (69.57% on desktop/laptop).
The Two Categories of SEO
On-page SEO
On-page SEO revolves around content. This means including specific keywords into your pages of content, ensuring the writing is of high quality and occurs regularly, and using metatags and titles that again include your keywords.
Off-page SEO
This optimization occurs “off” of the website itself. The primary source of this is backlinks. This reinforces the point of having strong, well written content; publishers will be more likely to link to your page when it contains top-quality content that will add value to their own page.
The Do's and Don'ts
As with anything, there is a right and a wrong way to do things. There are rewards and consequences to be had as well! When referring to SEO, we have what are called Black Hat strategies and White Hat strategies. In order to be successful, your page must be finely tuned using What Hat strategies. Employing the cheap and “make a quick buck” Black Hat strategies can get you penalized, and even removed from the search engine’s index. We’ll go over a few key points of both below.
White Hat Strategies
- Relevant content
- Relevant inks and references
- Complete sentences with good spelling and grammar
- Compliant coding
Black Hat Strategies
- Duplicate Content
- Links from sites with non-relevant content
- Poorly written; not considering the consumer
- Invisble text and "stuffed" keywords
