# Search Experience Optimization

SXO (Search Experience Optimization) is optimizing the whole search-to-satisfaction journey — not just where you rank, but whether a searcher lands, engages, completes a task, and comes back. It ties SEO (getting found), AEO (being the answer), and CRO (converting) into one measurable outcome: did the searcher's journey actually succeed? Google's Page Experience signals, engagement metrics, and downstream task completion are all part of the ranking algorithm now, so ranking optimizations that clash with intent don't hold.

## Why it matters

A #1 rank means nothing if 80% of visitors bounce back to the SERP within seconds. Google measures that pogo-stick behavior and demotes results that fail it — which means the ranking budget you spent on SEO can be undone by a slow, distracting, or intent-mismatched page. Contractors optimizing for the search-experience layer keep their rank AND convert the visits it earns.

## When to prioritize it

Prioritize SXO components when your rankings are healthy but calls, forms, and booked jobs lag — or when a competitor with worse rank is beating you on the same query because their page satisfies the visit and yours doesn't.

## Failure modes

- Ranking for high-intent queries with a page that reads like a corporate brochure instead of a service dispatch — the visit ends before the phone rings.
- Slow / bloated / distracting page UX that fails Google's Page Experience signals (Core Web Vitals + interaction latency + layout stability).
- No task-completion path on landing pages — no calculator, no visualizer, no booking, no quote form the visitor can finish in the same session.
- Optimizing SERP CTR (title tags, meta) without matching the follow-through content — clickbait rank is a demotion signal.
- One-and-done design: nothing on the page invites a return visit, so the visitor never becomes a brand recall.

## What the work looks like

- Task-completion tools — sizing calculators, financing pre-qual, visualizers, booking endpoints — that let the visit end in a real outcome
- SERP CTR primitives — rich-result schema (Product, Review, FAQ), review-star surfacing, honest pricing bands in meta
- Engagement + dwell — interactive diagrams, symptom checkers, learning centers that reward the click with substance
- Return-visit design — bookmarkable pages, saved-configuration links, email capture that gives them a reason to come back
- Exit-recovery paths — exit-intent quote capture, sticky call rails so a leaving visitor still becomes a lead
